Analytical Storytelling in Musewoods
Signal, then pattern, then evidence — composing with lens, matrix, and drilldown
A worked demonstration of the Musewoods analytical storytelling grammar: how a single finding becomes an authored reading (lens), a semantic pattern (matrix), a chart, and inspectable case evidence (drilldown), with method kept in reach. All figures are illustrative.

Abstract
Musewoods has three shared analytical primitives — lens, matrix, and drilldown — that work identically in Stories, Journals, and Groves. They exist to carry one discipline: an analytical piece should establish a signal, reveal a pattern, and expose inspectable evidence, becoming deeper as the reader engages rather than denser all at once. This article runs one small, illustrative analysis through all three. Every number here is invented to exercise the composition, not to assert anything about the world.
Signal — what to notice
A signal tells the reader what to notice. It does not yet say how to read it. The same finding supports more than one legitimate interpretation, and an author can offer both without turning the article into an application.
The reading — a lens
A lens is an authored perspective: the same analytical object, read through a small bounded set of interpretations. It is not a filter and not a query builder. Here the object is the 73% figure; the two readings are authority and exposure.
Who may legitimately act?
Read through authority, the number is about delegation: decisions are being made by actors whose mandate to make them was never explicitly granted. The gap is one of governance design, not tooling.
What consequence can the action create?
Read through exposure, the same number is about blast radius: an unverified commit is only as dangerous as the action it authorises and how reversible that action is.
The pattern — a matrix
A matrix shows categorical state across two dimensions. It is a semantic evidence surface, not a spreadsheet and not a numeric chart: the marks are shape plus tone plus an accessible label, and the vocabulary is declared per matrix.

Full, partial, or absent capability. A dash marks a stage the actor never reaches.
Verification is the column that thins first as authority extends.

The chart — the same evidence, measured
A chart deepens the pattern where an exact quantity matters. It resolves its data through the shared resolver from a logical dataset id — no URL, no table in the prose.
Where the exposure actually sits. Illustrative figures.

The evidence — a drilldown
A drilldown keeps the overview readable while each case's deeper evidence and provenance stay one action away. The collapsed roll is meant to be read on its own; opening a row is optional.
Delegated systems, assessed
Strong analytical semantics; a person remains the decision and the check.
The human is the verification step, so the exposure is bounded by what a person will approve.
Source Studio assessment, illustrative
Acts within a bounded scope; verification is self-reported, not independent.
A self-reported check is not an independent one. Raising the score would mean an external confirmation the agent cannot suppress.
Full authority to the point of action with no independent verification stage.
This is the case the headline figure is built from: high authority, high exposure, nothing in between.
Source Studio assessment, illustrative
Policy gate plus an external check; the only actor with independent verification.
An external check the runner cannot bypass is what separates this row from the rest.

Method and provenance
The sample is twenty-eight delegated decision paths across four illustrative systems. Each capability stage was scored full, partial, or absent by two reviewers, with disagreements resolved by discussion. Every number in this article is illustrative and carries no external claim. The composition — signal, then lens, then matrix, then chart, then drilldown, then method — is the point, not the data.
