451 did not begin with a portfolio category. It began with dissatisfaction with the conventional sequence of venture creation: form a company, fund an idea, build a product, and then discover whether the surrounding system actually needed what had been created.
The alternative was to begin earlier. Find the weak signal. Understand the system producing it. Turn intuition into a hypothesis. Bring practitioners close enough to challenge it. Seek a Minimum Verifiable Signal rather than premature certainty. Let pilots, customer pain, evidence, and operators progressively earn the right for a company to exist.
That changed the meaning of venture creation. The company was no longer the starting object. It became one possible consequence of learning.
