Musewoods · GroveThe Clearing

Adoption

The Clearing should enter Musewoods as a disciplined semantic capability, not as a large ontology project.

The concept is broad enough to tempt overbuilding. The first implementation should resist that temptation. Musewoods does not need universal entity extraction, automatic graph generation, or a new interactive application before it can prove the value of context. It needs a bounded semantic vocabulary, a few excellent reference Clearings, and enough runtime support to show that authored relationships can accumulate into useful orientation.

The First Version

  1. Preserve the four-field contract

Do not create a fifth publishing field. Canonical work remains in Stories, Journals, Viewgraphs, and Groves. Clearing is a system layer, and a durable human-facing Clearing can be projected through a Grove.

  2. Start with a small relationship registry

Implement only the relationship families that are clearly useful across several real Clearings. It is easier to add a new verb later than to remove dozens of overlapping predicates after authors have begun using them.

  3. Make context declarations reciprocal

One explicit relationship should enrich both sides of the graph. This is the mechanism that turns Clearing from manually curated navigation into living context.

  4. Preserve provenance from day one

Even the first implementation should distinguish authored, reciprocal, structural, temporal, and inferred edges. Retrofitting provenance after context has been flattened is much harder than carrying it from the beginning.

  5. Build the Context Package before elaborate visualization

The machine-readable subject-centered object is the stable contract. A D3 Context Map, search integration, and future agent interfaces should consume that contract rather than each inventing a separate relationship resolver.

Reference Clearings

Reference subjectWhy it is a strong test
The Converged Enterpriseconnects thesis, authority, GDF, AI Program Office, Journals, and Viewgraphs
Governed Data Foundryhas mature architecture, lineage, evidence, dependencies, and an active research frontier
Physical AIcombines thesis, technology, field conditions, industry context, evidence, and open questions
451 Venturestests whether the grammar works for an institutional philosophy and venture-formation system, not only technical architecture

These reference Clearings should be treated as design specimens. The relationship vocabulary, Context Package shape, and renderer grammar should be refined against real material rather than invented in abstraction.

A Staged Implementation

  1. 01 Semantic registry

Define stable subject identifiers, the bounded relationship vocabulary, reciprocal rules, and provenance classes. Add source-oriented validation before any interactive surface is built.

  2. 02 Artifact declarations

Allow canonical artifacts to declare typed context against stable targets. Resolve those declarations into one build-time graph without changing field ownership.

  3. 03 Clearing orientation

Define the small authored source that owns canonical meaning, question, status, tensions, and Frontier for a subject. Keep this separate from presentation mechanics and avoid duplicating long-form content already owned by canonical artifacts.

  4. 04 Context Package

Assemble subject-centered machine-readable context with provenance. Use it as the single input to future human and machine projections.

  5. 05 Grove projection

Add a Clearing-aware composition path inside the Grove field or a shared renderer consumed by Groves. The Grove should remain a Grove; the semantic context comes from the Clearing system rather than from a new field model.

  6. 06 Context Map and lenses

Once the first frame works editorially, add subject-centered graph navigation and context lenses as progressive disclosure. Interaction should reveal structure rather than compensate for a weak static composition.

  7. 07 Search and agent grounding

Let search prefer a Clearing when the user needs orientation, and let intelligent agents consume the Context Package before expanding into the wider corpus. Keep inferred relationships visibly subordinate to governed meaning.

Integration With The Field Manual

The Musewoods Field Manual documents Clearing beside Resonance as a cross-field system layer, and is precise about implementation status. Its Publishing Fields page shows four fields. Its Architecture page shows Clearing branching from canonical objects rather than entering the field normalizer. Its Extending Musewoods page explicitly rejects “Clearing as field number five” as an anti-pattern. System Health can eventually report registered Clearing relationships, validators, and context-package coverage once those capabilities exist in code.

Until implementation lands, the Field Manual labels the Clearing contract as a normative design direction rather than claiming runtime paths, registries, or tests that do not yet exist. The distinction matters because the Manual is itself intended to be build-verifiable documentation.

The Larger Direction

From a publishing system to a system for understanding

formation

Without Clearing, Musewoods can answer what has been written, shown, cultivated, and explored. With Clearing, it can begin to answer what those things mean together. That changes the platform's center of gravity. Publishing preserves expressions, and knowledge systems preserve information; The Clearing preserves the relationships through which ideas acquire meaning.

The long-term opportunity is therefore larger than a new page experience. Musewoods can become a place where a reader, collaborator, researcher, or intelligent agent enters an unfamiliar territory and quickly sees its standing meaning, history, evidence, tensions, dependencies, consequences, and frontier. Ideas do not merely remain stored there. They become capable of finding one another.
