Analytical System
Musewoods treats analytical work as part of an argument rather than as a dashboard bolted onto a page. The author begins by deciding what the reader needs to notice, what structure explains it, and what evidence makes the interpretation inspectable. Existing editorial and analytical motifs are then composed to do those jobs: an outcome, thesis, quote, or concise chart can establish a signal; a chart, Matrix, analysis grid, or Mermaid diagram can reveal pattern; and Drilldown, Ledger, notes, or sourced figures can expose the evidence beneath the interpretation.
This page has two purposes. The first half demonstrates the shared analytical primitives through one illustrative governance scenario. The chart section then switches deliberately into implementation specimens drawn from the canonical chart data used by Musewoods. Those figures exercise the chart engine; they are not presented as empirical evidence for the governance scenario above them.
The Signal
A useful analytical composition normally begins with one bounded claim before it introduces structure. The example below is intentionally illustrative: the number gives the reader something concrete to interrogate, while the Lens, Matrix, and Drilldown demonstrate three different ways to make the reasoning behind that claim visible.
The Signal, As A Number
73%
of delegated decisions reached commit unverified.
The Reading — Lens
Who may legitimately act?
Read through authority, the number is about delegation: decisions are being made by actors whose mandate to make them was never explicitly granted. The gap is therefore a governance-design problem before it is a tooling problem.
What consequence can the action create?
Read through exposure, the same number becomes a question of blast radius. An unverified commit is only as consequential as the action it authorizes, the assets it can affect, and the practical ability to reverse the outcome.
A Lens keeps the analytical object fixed while changing the authored interpretation around it. It is not a query control or a data filter: the reader is comparing ways of understanding the same object, not asking the system to recompute it. Semantics, validation, and panel structure live in lib/analytics/lens.mjs.
The Pattern — Matrix

The Pattern — Charts
Charts normalize into one shared ChartSpec regardless of the field that hosts them. The model carries analytical intent — chart type, dimensions, measures, sort, axis semantics, labels, annotations, and interaction — while the data reference is resolved separately and the renderer owns geometry. Field adapters define the safe area and editorial treatment around the figure; they do not fork the analytical engine.
The three figures below are representative engine specimens rather than one continuous dataset. The exhaustive chart inventory belongs in the canonical Journal gallery, Charts across Musewoods, where every registered family can be exercised without turning this Guide page into a chart catalog.

From Relationship To Composition
The first specimen compares contributions around a common zero and the second examines relationship between two measures. A treemap answers a different question entirely: where does the whole sit across a hierarchy? Breaking the run before the next figure makes that analytical change explicit instead of presenting three unrelated chart families as one uninterrupted visual rhythm.

Interaction Grammar
| Mode | What it does | Where it is permitted |
|---|---|---|
none | Static; the first frame carries the whole argument | every family |
inspect | Reveal precise evidence about one mark on hover, focus, or tap | every family |
focus | Reduce visual competition around one persistent selection | supported families |
compare | Hold a small set of selections side by side | supported cartesian families |
explore | Manipulate the analytical space rather than merely reveal marks | deliberately restricted |
Interaction passes through two gates: the chart family's engine capability in lib/chart/interaction.mjs, and the editorial permission granted by the host field in lib/chart/adapters.mjs. Unsupported combinations fail validation instead of silently degrading into something else. The first frame must still carry the argument; interaction can reveal precision, sustain comparison, or open exploration, but it should never be required to discover what the chart is fundamentally saying.
The Evidence — Drilldown
Delegated systems, assessed
Strong analytical semantics; a person remains the decision and the check.
Source Studio assessment, illustrative
Acts within a bounded scope; verification is self-reported, not independent.
Full authority to the point of action; no independent verification stage.
A Drilldown keeps the overview compact while making the evidence for one item available one deliberate action away. It is not a card grid and it is not a generic accordion: the structure is an evidence roll whose items share a common summary contract and expand into inspectable detail. The semantic model lives in lib/analytics/drilldown.mjs.
From Signal To Inspectable Evidence
The governance example on this page demonstrates one analytical composition: a signal becomes two authored readings, the Matrix exposes the pattern behind those readings, and the Drilldown makes each assessment inspectable. The chart specimens demonstrate the second half of the system: a shared engine that can express different analytical jobs without leaking geometry into authored content. Together they show the governing principle of Musewoods analytics — make the argument legible in the first frame, then make the reasoning and provenance progressively inspectable.
Resonance Signals Are Not Analytical Content
bounded-journey-signals
The eight registered Resonance events describe delivery, entry, engagement, depth, field crossing, Grove reach, Follow creation, and Return. They are a bounded operational grammar using opaque actor identifiers, not a generic source of events for authors to query directly inside Story, Journal, or Grove analytical motifs.
authored-analysis
Charts, Lens, Matrix, and Drilldown remain authored evidence surfaces with their own semantic and provenance contracts. If Resonance rollups later become a dataset for editorial analysis, they should enter through the normal logical data-resolution seam rather than creating a Resonance-specific chart engine or letting presentation components read the event store directly.
